Yon-Kyu

So I passed my green belt test this weekend, I’m officially another step down the ladder. Next stop, brown!
This month also marks my two year anniversary. It’s a little strange to look back on the time that’s passed — things change so slowly that you almost don’t recognize it. It’s easy to get discouraged and think — well, what the fuck? Am I any closer to finding… anything?
But then I look back at how far I’ve come, all the changes I’ve made in the last two years, and it’s a little overwhelming. Whether any or all of the changes are attributable to my practice, I don’t know, but I’m sure it has to have helped.

You’re working your way down the ladder? But what if there are alligators at the bottom of the ladder?
Never mind, I answered my own question. If there are alligators at the bottom of the ladder, you’d best know some form of martial art if you’re going to be at the bottom with them.
Oh no, no martial arts necessary — when faced with alligators, I believe the appropriate defense remains the utterance of the phrase “see you later, –”
If that doesn’t work then I think the fallback is to menacingly tell them you know people at IZOD.
Ha, anyway. Congratulations. Does this mean you can break a board with your head?
As Mr. Miyagi said, ‘Don’t know. Never been attacked by tree.’
: )
Congratulations!
And, yeah I’m sure you’ve grown in 2 years. It might not be immediately evident, but it will eventually.
Is that your arm?
Indeed it is.
Congrats on the yon kyu! Which art are you studying?
I stumbled on your blog last night and had to bookmark it for the following reasons:
Your “I am a Nerd” post. It was Friday night and I was blogging… so I figured I could relate.
Your green belt. I have my brown (in shito ryu karate-do) but haven’t studied in a few years.
Your hairy arm looks like my brother’s. My family has directly descended from the apes. (No offense.) In middle school they called me Chewbacca. But I got over it.
Anyway, I like your blog and I decided to de-lurk. I’ll be back!
Cool, always good to meet a fellow dork : )
I’m studying Wado-Ryu. It’s mostly a blend of traditional Okinawan Karate and Shindo Yoshin Ryu Jujutsu. I sort of just stumbled into the style but it’s turned out to be pretty much exactly what I was looking for.
And yeah, the hairyness… I think that’s the French half of my blood. If only the hair would grow on my head the way it does everywhere else… sigh…
