Hot Karl
I look forward to checking this out over the weekend — Karl Hess – Toward Liberty, a documentary made in the 80s now available online.
Who is Karl Hess? Wikipedia gives a pretty good overview. Basically, Goldwater’s former speech writer ["Extremism in the pursuit of liberty is no vice"], later turned anarcho-capitalist, still later drifted — perhaps not all the way to anarcho-syndicalism, geoanarchism, or mutualism, but still definitely to a left-anarchism of sorts with high regards for unions, co-ops, and other forms of voluntary organization that are often considered at least antagonistic to ‘capitalism’. I saw him interviewed in Anarchism in America, definitely an interesting dude.
In 1992, Hess agreed to serve as the Libertarian Party’s candidate for governor of West Virginia to call attention to the difficulties of ballot access in the state. When asked by a reporter what he would do if he actually won the election, Hess replied, “I will demand an immediate recount.”
