Blakemore Trio

So last night I ratcheted up my culture quest another notch, going to see the Blakemore Trio performing at Vanderbilt/Blair’s Ingram Hall.

It was another fine performance, these are three obviously accomplished musicians, and their renditions of Beethoven and Brahms swept me up in in a melodious waterfall; I felt more than once like a young Joseph Knecht listening to the Music Master in Hesse’s ‘Glass Bead Game’.

An interesting twist was their middle performance, a piece called “Sound and Fury” by a local composer named Paul Osterfield. It was– well, I want to reserve judgement, it is easier to cirticize than to create, and I would rather sound like Paula Abdul than Simon Cowell. I suppose the best way I can put it is: Osterfield obviously has an impressive vocabulary, I just wish he had more to say; the piece very often sounded like excercise for its own sake. Nevertheless the trio’s performance was masterful.

All in all I think I will definatley be adding more Blair events to my calendar.
