And we could do “Shakespeare in the Park” in Spanish!

Via PITW we learn of one man’s quest to make the fairgrounds green.

From some of the discussion I heard during the South Nashville planning process, I fear it’s a quixotic cause for the immediate future, but I applaud and encourage the effort. For some time I’ve envisioned a day when the fairgrounds could become something like Centennial Park South, a beautiful South Nashville centerpiece instead of the underutilized eye and ear sore that drags our community down.

EDIT: From the comments at Pith there appears to be concern over the site’s true motivation, and indeed the site does mention mixed use residential development as part of the plan. I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing, I would wait to see some more substantial plan to reserve judgment. Meanwhile, I think any move to create public demand to do something better with that space seems to be a step in the right direction.

I too would like to see something like Centennial Park. Perhaps a new Fair Park? Unfortunately, I think it is something that the city wants to bring in revenue, so SOL, I guess.

Yeah that’s the impression I get. I think there may be some long-term contract entanglements as well.

Unfortunately so. I wouldn’t mind having the Sounds build a new stadium there and use the new stadium for other events. At least the lease with the car racing will be up next year. Hopefully that will go away.
