Confused?

You won’t be, after this week’s episode of … Soap!

Ha. I don’t have much to say, I just really love that line, maybe one of the best tag lines in television history.

Anyway I just got through watching Season One. I have faint memories of it coming on when I was a kid, though I was too young to pay attention or anything. But meanwhile I’ve heard of its acclaim and notoriety over the years, so I thought I’d give it a spin. And, yeah, I can see why it might have raised a few eyebrows in ‘78, even if it is pretty tame by today’s standards. If nothing else it has been interesting seeing early parts by so many actors who would become fixtures in the 80s and beyond. Not just the main characters, but even bit parts — like Sorrell Booke, the man who would become Boss Hog, as the (comparatively thin!) Jewish mobster, just for one example.

I suppose it’s like there are all sorts of loose threads of memories that I grew up on that I can now sort of see tied back together in their common pre-history or something. But then I suppose I’m giving it way too much thought. Confused? You won’t be…
