    I’m so pissed that Harold Ford co-sponsored this bill. I think his father would be ashamed. Yeah, I went there.

    Well, I guess I can understand some mixed reactions on that one. Drilling off the coast would seem to have two sides: less foregin oil = good, turning our common resources over to corporations = bad.

    Personally I don’t think I would support it as is, but I probably would if it included Georgist-style provisions where essentially companies first have to purchase the raw oil from the people before they can drill, with the proceeds distributed equally to citizens as royalites, similar to the Alaska permanent fund. That would give us the benefits of jobs, energy independence, etc, without creating an opportunity for the energy corps to exploit common resources for their own unearned windfall. The benefits go instead to the people, easing poverty and other burdens, while also serving to keep the costs & prices high enough to keep everyone interested in finding longer term alternatives.
